Everything in this universe is made up of energy, of vibrations, that can influence other things around them. This is how energy healing practices work: reiki, prana healing, crystals and singing bowls all use the principle of what is known as resonance in physics. This is how you can break a glass with your voice.

All living things have a life force energy that surrounds them. This is what makes them “alive”, as opposed to a rock or a plastic bag. Due to energetic resonance, this energy interacts with those around it. It happens when a practitioner gives you a treatment, too. The practitioner is attuned to this higher energy frequency that is reiki, and can channel it to treat you. Think of the practitioner as a radio: reiki is always there, invisibly surrounding us, just like radio waves. She is attuned to reiki, just like a radio can be tuned to a station, and she is able to channel that energy to you, just like the radio lets you hear the songs that were just radio waves a moment ago.

When the practitioner channels this higher frequency, healing energy, it interacts with your own life force energy, your aura, and if there are any blockages, any disturbances, it will help in restoring balance to those. Reiki has been scientifically studied and proven to bring positive changes to the recipient’s wellbeing. It was shown to bring relief to the nervous system, and shift it from flight-fight-fawn mode into rest and restore mode, allowing the body to concentrate on healing instead of survival. Reiki reduces stress, and the production of stress-hormones. It relaxes the body, and by doing so, elevates the recipient’s mood.

Reiki does seem like magic, and maybe it is. Maybe what we call magic is just science that we haven’t deciphered yet. In any case, reiki works on multiple levels.
